GSA Update

You will recall our collective action last summer to send a strong message to the federal government in support of LEED. In total, 1,250 companies and organizations signed the letter that was delivered to GSA during the initial stages of their once-every-five-years review of green building rating systems.

While we were expecting GSA to conclude this nearly two-year effort this month, instead they have announced that they need more information... which opens the door for one more critical opportunity for us to make sure GSA gets it right.

What you can do:
  • Tell GSA why LEED makes sense for you, your clients and the federal government. Simply review the RFI and submit your comment today! Additional information on the RFI can be found here
  • Ask your networks to comment! USGBC circulated this letter (also attached) to the 1250 signatories of last year's letter asking them to comment.
  • Keep informed: We will be updating www.usgbc.org with more materials and instructions to help in the commenting process. Let’s take advantage of this next 51 days to ensure GSA knows the USGBC community stands for leadership.
All comments are due by April 6th!

Our Chapter's Priorities for 2013!

Visit http://new.usgbc.org/resources/2013-priorities-chapters for more details on each of the priorities.

Membership
In 2012, USGBC introduced a simpler and more inclusive membership structure that helps organizations interact with us in a manner that best accommodates their priorities, needs and budget. This change will help broaden the base of green building supporters and open the door to new members by removing barriers to entry. Our Membership Liaison will be: Lenora Isom

Green Building Information Gateway (GBIG)
GBIG is a global innovation platform for exploring and comparing the green dimensions of the built environment. It is the premier search engine for green building data, providing insights that enable better buildings and communities. http://www.gbig.org/
Our GBIG Liaison will be: Dr. Kevin Miller (Wayne State College)

LEED v4
LEED must continuously improve to drive change and transform the market, and the chapter community plays a critical role in this process. As more educational resources become available, our chapter will distribute to our market.
Our LEED v4 Liaison will be: Amanda Bogner (The Energy Studio)

LEED Project Based Learning
USGBC’s LEED Project Directory (http://new.usgbc.org/projects) engages the green building community in contributing to and learning from LEED projects to advance green building knowledge. The directory offers a powerful opportunity to highlight projects in your community, engage new audiences and volunteers, and earn LEED project experience and LEED-specific CMP hours.
Our LEED Project Based Learning Liaison will be: Tim Rogers (Clark Enersen Partners)

LEED for Existing Homes
There are over 120 million existing housing units in the United States, many of which are in dire need of energy efficient and other green upgrades. This collection of existing homes is an enormous opportunity for chapters to engage in one of the most ambitious and rewarding campaigns USGBC has ever undertaken. An existing homes program is currently in development and will be ready for beta testing at the end of Q2 2013. Our chapter will help recruit members to participate in the existing homes platform beta beginning in Q2.

State and Local Advocacy
More information at: www.usgbc.org/campaigns. We are currently on the look-out for members who want to get more engaged with the Advocacy effort on a local level and take these initiatives on with us!
Our chapter will engage in the following advocacy campaigns in 2013:
  • Highlight Green Homes
  • Improve Energy Data Access
  • Mainstream Building Benchmarking
  • Value Healthy and Efficient Affordable Housing
  • Establish Common Ground and Green Schools

Green Apple Day of Service
September 28, 2013 will mark the second annual Green Apple Day of Service. In 2012, 100% of chapters engaged in this initiative and we hope to see even more activity from chapters in 2013. USGBC will be ramping up efforts to support organizers early in the year, including new resources on mygreenapple.org to address communications, recruitment, fundraising and more.
Our pathway for engagement will include:
·         Planning at least one event
·         Spreading the word about the Day of Service
·         Partnering with local institutes or members to co-lead on more events

Diversity and Engagement
For USGBC to meet its vision of green buildings for everyone within this generation, a more diverse group of stakeholders must be engaged on both the national and local levels for our movement to gain true scale.
Our Faith-Based Community Action Team Liaisons will be: Rev. Kim Morrow (First Plymouth Church) and Al Grosskurth (Trane)
Our Community Service Action Team Liaison will be: Danny Mclaughlin (US Army Corps of Engineers)

Emerging Professionals
Our chapter plans on engaging in the Emerging Professionals priority by committing to partner with a higher education institution for an on-campus chapter introduction hour in Spring 2013.

Volunteer Development
USGBC’s volunteer network is a key reason market transformation related to green building has been so significant over the past decade.
Our Volunteer Manager will be: Shervin Ansari (Kiewit)

New Opportunity to Earn LEED Project Experience

The LEED Project Profile Library advances green building through the distribution of wisdom gained through practical, hands-on experiences. We are excited to announce that prospective LEED credential holders can now earn LEED project experience and become eligible to take the LEED AP exam by facilitating the successful completion and publication of a LEED project profile. Existing credential holders can also gain up to three LEED-specific CE hours per published project.

Our chapter will be involved in the LEED Project-Based Learning priority for 2013 and will bring more information about this and other opportunities when it is available.

Member of the Year 2012

The 2012 Member of the Year trophy will be awarded to Erin Rau, Programs Committee Chair (2012-2013) for her outstanding volunteer efforts and going above and beyond in the name of Green Building education on behalf of our chapter over the past year.

This is the fifth year the award has been presented.
