November Lunch Session: LEED for Homes – Opportunity knocking for Nebraska

Over the past few years, LEED for Homes has been the fastest growing USGBC rating system. The LEED for Homes rating system applies to single family, low-rise multi-family, and mid-rise multi-family residential units (up to 8 stories). Between 2006-2014, LEED for Homes has grown exponentially from 31 buildings certified in 2006 to over 21,000 LEED for Homes certified units in 2014 with the majority of these units coming from the multi-family and affordable housing sector. But of the 136,731 certified LEED for Homes units in the U.S., only 3 are in Nebraska. Why? Nationally, 75% of the LEED for Homes multi-family units were built at local market rates, so cost is not a major factor. Grab your business manager and come find out what other firms and states are doing to drive LEED for Homes construction.

Design for Life: Lessons from Nature

What would our world look like if we rediscovered the lessons of nature? What if the places we live and work engaged our senses in a healthy way and celebrated culture with nature, encouraging human delight? How can a leaf inspire a solar cell? Or organizations learn from a tree or a coral reef? Biomimicry is an innovation method that seeks new ways of living sustainably—from new products and processes to policies—by emulating nature’s time-tested patterns and strategies. Janine Benyus, the founder of biomimicry, introduces an era based not on what we can extract from organisms and their ecosystems, but on what we can learn from them. Instead of technology working separately from nature, imagine a world where technology is in relationship with nature. Biophilic design articulates the relationships between nature, human biology and the design of the built environment so we experience the natural environment more in our daily world. Academics, researchers and others have codified valuable design research for improving health and well-being in our built environment into patterns of biophilic design; Patterns “that nurture the innate human attraction to natural systems and processes.” Come learn how to bring nature back into our buildings, neighborhoods and lives.

EARTH WEEK 2015

Please come out and celebrate Earth Week with us Thursday evening April 23rd at Aksarben Cinema. We are proud to co-host a sustainability partnership event between US Green Building Council Nebraska Flatwater Chapter (USGBC NFC), Green Omaha Coalition (GOC), Joslyn Institute for Sustainable Communities, and Nebraska Loves Public Schools (NE♥PS). We will be screening a few short environmental films, including a short film by NE♥PS and our main film created by Joslyn Institute for Sustainable Communities called Nebraska Nexus, about sustainability in our state. There will be catered food, a full cash bar, and time to socialize with your sustainable peers prior to the film. There will also be an attendee discount on concessions for the show. After the films, as a follow up to last year's USGBC NFC Town Hall "Regenerate" in June 2014, we will host a town hall discussion to hear from you: we will share our findings from last year's town hall, talk about the power of partnerships, harvest the genius of the audience, and talk about next steps to build a greener future together. USGBC GBCI CE's will be available. The event is free to thank you for all you do locally, for Nebraska and for the Earth.
